The Apprentice (2024)

I don’t really get who this movie is for. If you like Donald Trump, why would you watch this? The Apprentice depicts the worst version you could imagine of Trump, if one is to take the film’s presentation as all based in fact. If you dislike Donald Trump, why would you watch this? I can’t imagine someone who hates Trump choosing to spend 2 hours with Trump in the context of a film. I think this movie came out at the absolute worst possible time and would’ve been better suited for years or decades down the road. Though it doesn’t offer much kick, it offers a dark and relevant portrait of the minds of those able to game the US in their favour. The movie doesn’t attribute any grand or personal motivations to their pursuits for power. But I think that may be true about power hungry people: they’re just empty, clawing and climbing because they don’t know what else to do with themselves. It’s an interesting portrait of Trump because it doesn’t sensationalize, just lets you sit with how pathetic he is. Shows you what he wouldn’t want you to see which is the careful construction of a personality that he markets as authentic. Sebastian Stan and Jeremy Strong are both excellent here. Stan embodies Trump from a much deeper place than an impression would give, and Strong is calmly terrifying with his zombied eyes. The movie works because of these performances.

TL;DR - Better Man is a fresh, eccentric take on a musical biopic! Full of catchy songs, show-stopping musical sequences, and very bold, honest, creative filmmaking. What a gigantic surprise! I’m so glad I saw it in theatres — it utterly blew me away. Vulnerable, electric, magical cinema from start to finish! (And I had no clue who Robbie Williams was going in!)

Fun Fact: The film arose from multiple interview recordings filmmaker Michael Gracey made with Robbie Williams during the course of a year and a half in Williams’ recording studio in Los Angeles, in the United States. Although the interviews weren’t originally for a film, as Gracey “just wanted to capture [Williams] in his own voice telling his story,” the majority of Williams’ voiceover in the film is from those recordings.

Fun Fact: Following the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022), Jim Carrey announced that he was considering retirement, and said he would only return to acting if “the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that says to me that it’s going to be really important for people to see.” Producers Neal H. Moritz and Toby Ascher stated that Carrey’s role as Dr. Robotnik would not be recast if he followed through with his plans, but remained hopeful that he would be willing to continue the role if the script was satisfactory to him. They would eventually sent him a script for this film printed it out with 24-carat ink. In February 2024, he was confirmed to reprise his role, making it the first time Carrey has starred in more than two films as the same character.

A Different Man (2024)

I couldn’t help but think of how much A Different Man reminded me of the works of Charlie Kaufman — it is so uniquely profound in its storytelling. A Different Man is a dark comedy exploring insecurities and wanting to be a better version of yourself — essentially our obsession with self-image. The writing is really great — it may start out slow but the last hour is lightning in a bottle. It’s uniquely funny, pretty dark, and very perceptive about the masks we wear and those we can’t shed. And it features a fascinating performance from Sebastian Stan, who delivers some of his best work! However, it is Adam Pearson who steals the show with a very charismatic performance, fully embracing his own face.

TL;DR - Nosferatu is another masterwork in tension and period detail from Robert Eggers. There is a seductive quality to this film that pulls you in and doesn’t let go until the final gut punch of a frame, as its atmosphere and cinematography are hypnotic. Nosferatu is a beautiful, terrifying, sweaty nightmare that you never quite want to wake up from. If you are looking for a truly immersive horror experience, this is it. Nosferatu is one of the best movies of the year, and Eggers’ best film yet. I am so, so in love with it!

It’s believed that Bram Stoker first learned it from an 1885 article by Emily Gerard on Transylvanian superstition, and the only previous usage is from a German article on vampires from 1865 by Wilhelm Schmidt. Both sources claim the word is Romanian, but the term has no meaning in that language.

TL;DR - As a huge fan of the original animated Lion King, Mufasa: The Lion King left me disappointed. It was a fine film, enjoyable for families, and had some stellar visuals, but I never felt any of it. It is an entertaining watch but lacks the substance and emotion of what made the original animated film so special. I hoped Barry Jenkins and Lin-Manuel Miranda could recapture the spark, but unfortunately, I was left disappointed. But hey, it’s better than the 2019 film (and I liked that one to some extent)!

Fun Fact: Director Barry Jenkins addressed a long-standing debate surrounding 2019’s remake of “The Lion King”, which now affects the upcoming prequel too. Should they be classified as animated movies or live action? In an exclusive interview with GamesRadar+ and Total Film, Jenkins gives a very definitive answer. “Absolutely, yeah, it’s an animated film,” he asserts. “I am communicating constantly with these animators who are trying to manipulate these somewhat photorealistic sort of models in a way that is expressive. And so because of that, I don’t think of it as live action. I do think of it as animation... It’s just a very different tool.”

A Real Pain (2024)

I was really moved by A Real Pain — a powerfully funny and emotional resonant dramady that contains Jesse Eisenberg’s best performance since The Social Network. He also displays significant growth as a filmmaker with sharp, observant writing and reserved, confident direction. Yet, it’s Kieran Culkin who steals the film with a charming, sarcastic and painfully vulnerable turn. They compliment each other so well in their roles as they explore their family history through Poland and heal their bond through personal and collective pain. What’s so alive about this dual character study is how these characters challenge each other to their core. They see in each other what they lack. And instead of dramatic character arcs and big revelations, we watch these characters grapple with what the other activates in them, and make what peace they can with each other. Jesse Eisenberg is a deeply observant, humanist filmmaker interested in exploring big, clashing personalities. He emotionally chronicles the yearn to learn your past in order to heal your future, clearly imbuing the story with very personal aspect. He showcases exquisite restraint as a writer/director, telling a beautiful story about the contradictions and complexity of our relationship to pain and how we express it, stirring together the humour and darker edges of each scene so organically. A Real Pain effortlessly uses an intimate scope to measure personal pain against collective and how it affects one’s ability to heal. It’s easy to identify ourselves in the grander ideas presented in the film (trauma, grief, emotio-social life strategy, class, privilege) because we see ourselves in the characters. Brilliant screenwriting — I hope Eisenberg gets the Oscar he deserved for The Social Network in the form of Best Original Screenplay this year)! This one is a real winner in every regard, I highly recommend A Real Pain.

Emilia Pérez (2024)

Emilia Perez comes with redeemable qualities and there are certain parts of this film that I enjoyed, but ultimately this movie just does not work. Emilia Perez is not the Best Picture contender I had hoped for nor is does it live up to the expectations set by so many who loved it. It’s a film so eager to be so many things, executed with incredible confidence. However, it most certainly bites off more than it can chew. As a trans story, as a musical, and as an ode to the missing in Mexico, it only partially delivers on each which is unfortunate. But it’s easy to admire and enjoyable to watch as the bold swing it is. It’s just far too messy of a film, it’s juggling too much to find success. I’m sorry, but Emilia Perez is not a memorable movie and never seemed to have the makings of one.
