The Fall Guy (2024)

★★★★★

The Fall Guy ROCKS. I don’t even care — instant 5 stars as this is easily the most fun I’ve had at a movie in the longest time. Everyone I saw it with loved it and it just ended up being such a great movie watching experience. Yeah sure, by critical standards this is no masterpiece — but I just don’t care because I flat-out enjoyed myself. This movie is insanely fun and I loved, loved, loved it!

The Fall Guy is Hollywood action spectacle at its best! It's charming, it's funny, it's romantic, it's atmospheric, it's got dazzling stunts, it's got movie stars being movie stars. This is why god invented Hollywood. To me, the film was firing on all cylinders and delivered everything I could have wanted from it – it really seems like a great crowd-pleaser and has something for everyone – it’s so much fun to see with a crowd! The film proudly wears its heart on its sleeve as a tribute to old-school stunt action filmmaking and the men and women who put their bodies and lives on the line for our entertainment. Needless to say, the stunt work is phenomenal and inventive. It’s so much fun to watch them play in this playground – and must’ve been so fun to be a stunt person on this movie! The film has so much respect for stuntpeople and what they do for cinema, and delivers one of the biggest arguments outside of John Wick and Mission: Impossible of why there should be an Oscar category for stunts.

The Fall Guy is an excellent example of flawless execution allowing us to let go of small inconsistencies. I love this movie despite its flaws. Sure, it has a predictable, cheesy, somewhat conventional script – but they manage to pull it off so well and in such an entertaining way during the movie that I never found it to be an issue at any point. The film has so much charm, heart, and energy that you just don’t care about any minor issues – I found every aspect of the movie to just work perfectly for what it was. It’s goofy. It’s absurd. It doesn’t take itself too seriously and almost has a sort of Tropic Thunder energy to it – it just really feels like they caught lightning in a bottle for this one! I think part of why I love this movie so much is it feels like it came from an earlier time in Hollywood when original stories were embraced – it’s a refreshing, low-stakes story that makes it easy to forget about the world for two hours or so. It feels like a throwback to the best of 80s/90s action comedies, frankly, it might be the best action-packed love story since 1994’s True Lies!

Now, those of you who know me know that my favourite actor is easily Ryan Gosling. And my god has he ever delivered again! Fresh off their Barbenheimer success last summer, Gosling and Emily Blunt have endless chemistry (genuinely… its MAGIC) as former lovers working together on a movie that goes wrong in every way imaginable. They are so damn great together, both have PERFECT comedic timing, and it is their chemistry that truly anchors the movie. Not to mention that Gosling (or, the Gos, as we like to call him) exudes charisma and charm throughout the entire runtime. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen an actor more likable than Ryan Gosling, and if Barbie wasn’t proof enough, you have to see him in The Fall Guy

A rousing, funny, action-packed throwback to the 80s action craze, with all the hallmarks of the best rom-coms. Impeccably paced, super thrilling, and loaded with the best kind of wildly charming star power, The Fall Guy works on every single level. I’m just totally floored by the utter delight I felt watching an extremely well-executed movie designed to celebrate stunt performers — and ALL the unsung heroes in the film industry. It’s pure movie magic and the perfect example of why people love going to the movies – to be entertained! Oh, and the use of Taylor Swift’s “All Too Well” was absolutely brilliant!
