IF (2024)

★★★★

John Krasinski has created something truly special with IF; a fantastically written and directed piece of storytelling led by a lovable Ryan Reynolds and outstanding Cailey Fleming that packs an unprecedented amount of heart, soul, and emotion within it. Plus, it’s a ton of fun! IF proves John Krasinski really has done it again after the success of his Quiet Place films, and what’s more, this is as close as we’ll ever get to a live-action Pixar film and it is WONDERFUL! I said it after seeing A Quiet Place Part 2 and I’ll say it again: if anyone is gonna be a modern-day Spielberg, it’s Krasinski! Whether he’s making a horror or a family film, John Krasinski has proven himself to be an extremely emotionally intelligent storyteller. I love that he took a big swing and wrote this charming, original family film that really has some truly interesting observations about life and growing up.

I loved this movie — came out of it feeling so many emotions. I love that it made me feel something from start to finish without being emotionally manipulative. Did I expect to cry going in? Nope. But I did, and I love the movie for that. It’s a warm, wonderful, and very emotionally satisfying film. IF sneaks up on you and hits you in the feels. It’s way darker than I expected it to be, exploring grief and the loss of childhood dreams. IF starts off as a super cute kids movie before proceeding to deliver a wave of emotions to all the adults watching. Ultimately this film is about healing yourself. “It’s when kids grow up that they need their imaginary friends the most.” After all, everyone wants to have someone in their corner.

IF captures the magic of childlike imagination. It’s endlessly silly, with enough laughs and genuine emotion to balance out a slightly bumpy story and some pacing issues. It’s filled with a charming, wide-eyed wonder and adventurous spirit that makes it the best family live-action film in ages. John Krasinski has crafted a joyful and profound instant classic with this film — a beautiful story about childhood that will inspire both young and older viewers. And I have to mention Michael Giacchino’s score — he knocks it out of the park and really enhances so many of the emotional moments! After IF and the Quiet Place films, I’ll see anything Krasinski does! He truly has great taste as a writer and director and hasn’t missed yet! IF is the family film of 2024, perhaps even the most meaningful and heartfelt movie of the year! I loved it and highly recommend it! I can’t wait to see what Krasinski does next!

Fun Fact: Brad Pitt is credited as playing Keith. However, since Keith is an invisible character that has no line of dialogue, this is likely not a genuine credit, but a joke connecting this film to Deadpool 2 (2018), which also starred Ryan Reynolds and where Brad Pitt also played an invisible character.
