This movie genuinely pissed me off. You’d think with all the acclaim it has received in the literary world that this movie might have turned out better. But oh god… it’s just painfully mediocre. And that’s fine, it wouldn’t have annoyed me if that’s all it was. But the ending made me mad. It felt tonally incoherent, wasn’t built up to at all and felt like it came out of nowhere, and just didn’t make sense at all for the story. Like I was fine with the movie before the ending… but the climax and then the final reveal in the last scene was just unbearable… I couldn’t believe the writers and filmmakers thought this was a strong ending to their film… it absolutely ripped apart the entire story. The rest of the movie; a perfectly fine, if not mediocre and average, drama about a girl growing up on her own. Daisy Edgar-Jones was fine, but as for the rest of the cast I never felt like anyone truly sold their performances. And the dialogue was pretty terrible too. I never thought the story went any deeper than surface level either, it didn’t offer any insights or seem to have anything to say. There’s just nothing great about this movie, and the ending unfortunately completely sinks the ship. It’s ridiculous. Not even worth my time to fully review… heck I overheard many people in my audience complaining after the movie ended. It’s not necessarily bad, but it’s not good either… just go see “NOPE” if you’re looking for a good movie right now!
