Tick, Tick... BOOM! (2021)

Rating: 8.5

Turns out Lin-Manuel Miranda is just good at everything, which is honestly not a surprise! His debut film, Tick, Tick… Boom, is stunning, a beautiful ode to the creative process, musical theatre and Jonathan Larson himself. It’s such an impressive feat for Miranda as he directs like a seasoned filmmaker, he stages the musical sequences so well and handles the story in masterful ways, while still adding in moments of creative flair and musical magic… it just feels like one of those soon to be iconic musicals. Not only that, but Miranda uses his camera in such unconventional and creative ways, I think it’s really interesting to see his creative style translate on to film. The story itself feels very personal and insightful into Larson’s life as he struggled to become a playwright and write his first musicals. The songs all deal with different feelings and emotions he had about his life at the time, and are all super entertaining and memorable, they come together to make a really interesting final product! I just really love the idea of an autobiographical musical, for a playwright that has to be one of the most fulfilling things; to really communicate your own personal struggles with creativity and life through song. While I’m not what you’d call a “theatre kid” (and if you are one DEFINITELY see this) I do love film and I find the two are very much one in the same creatively, so this movie really spoke to me! Not to mention Andrew Garfield’s BREATHTAKING performance as Larson, he is perfect in the role, really showing his range as an actor. I always forget how talented Garfield is, he’s truly a gifted performer and wow can he ever sing! The film also packs such an emotional punch; it had me crying by the end. I think the reason why it works so well is because of how personal and meaningful of a story it is to Lin-Manuel Miranda, someone who went through his own versions of these struggles with his own musicals “In the Heights” and “Hamilton”. That’s why he’s able to pull off such an impressive film here, he personally felt the need to really do the story justice. I absolutely loved it and a lot of the songs and themes really resonated with me!
