The Marvels (2023)

Rating: 8.4

Holy shit!

I am so pleasantly surprised!

Count me as a HUGE fan of The Marvels!

What a delightful film! It’s so much fun - truly some of the most fun I’ve had watching an MCU film in a while! And no, not fun like, “It wasn’t great, but at least it was fun.” No. This movie was great AND is such a fun, nonstop cosmic thrill ride! I went in nervous because of the lacklustre marketing campaign… but by a few minutes in I had the biggest grin on my face! I absolutely adored this movie! It deserves so much more love than it’s getting!

A breath of fresh air for the MCU that balances terrific humour and heart throughout and boasts fantastic performances and chemistry from its main trio of Larson, Parris, and Vellani. (Iman Vellani stole the show as Ms Marvel, she is perfect as this character and just so infectiously charming, much like Tom Holland as Peter Parker.) It’s easy for directorial style to get lost in the “Marvel machine”, but Nia DaCosta sure left her mark on the MCU! DaCosta was the jolt of energy this character and story needed, bringing a breath of fresh air to the MCU, delivering assured storytelling and visually dynamic, creative action sequences that feel like something we haven’t seen before! (And some wacky, bold sequences that aren’t for everyone, but I loved them!) The film is ruthlessly cut to the bone but in this case, it works to keep the film zipping along! The villain may be flat and forgettable, the story could use a bit more fleshing out and had some iffy plotting and there may be a smidge too much humour (although it worked a lot better for me here than in most other Marvel films), not uncommon Marvel problems, but this is a sequel that soars past the original in virtually every facet. The raw, contagious spirit of the film blew me away. It’s easily one of the most enjoyable projects of the Multiverse Saga! Left me with a HUGE smile on my face. The story is fast-paced and easy to follow and it’s literally such a light, sweet time. Don’t know what’s not to like?! It also restores something desperately needed in the MCU: hope for what comes next.

I am an extremely happy MCU fan right now; so delightfully surprised and excited to rewatch The Marvels!
