The Gray Man (2022)

Rating: 7.6

With Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans starring, and the Russo brothers directing, this movie should have been a slam dunk. Unfortunately it wasn’t. It was fine; I didn’t mind it, but it wasn’t as great as I was hoping it could be… just more of a standard spy action thriller. Mission Impossible and James Bond own this sub-genre right now, and it’s really hard to be distinct compared to their stuff, so when a movie like this comes along and is just okay… it seems even worse in comparison to others that have done it so much better. The film is cliched, very average and honestly quite slow at times. The action isn’t incredible, but it’s fun at least, and the Russos always know how to shoot it interestingly. And hey, at least this film doesn’t look as bad as “Cherry”. It’s got some decent cinematography, nothing special, but it works, and I found the usage of drones to be quite interesting! I did really like Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans in it however…. quite honestly I’d watch them in anything! Chris Evans playing snarky characters is my new favourite thing, and Ryan Gosling just kills at everything he does! The film also had a great soundtrack! But unfortunately it’s all pretty forgettable… the standard for a Netflix film. I just don’t understand how the Russos and their writers from Marvel weren’t able to make this anything special. Maybe they’re just better working with Kevin Feige? Or maybe they’re just picking the wrong projects. I’d still watch anything they make because of how good their Avengers movies were… but I just wish they could replicate that magic outside of Marvel for once. They’re so talented… but really struggling to show it at times. So to sum it up, I didn’t mind “The Gray Man”, it was decent, but ultimately disappointing when considering the talent involved.
