The Bubble (2022)

Rating: 4.5

This is not at all a good movie. It didn’t make me laugh once and was mildly annoying to watch. I hoped it would have interesting insights and satirical moments from early COVID and how that affected the movie industry, and while it had that to some extent, I felt that it focused more on these “celebrities” just being shitty people and complaining about extra COVID procedures. I really didn’t care for the characters at all because of their attitudes and while the cast was quite impressive most of them weren’t even good in this. It’s such a weakly produced, unfunny and overlong film. It’s probably one of Apatow’s worst films, I feel bad for wanting to watch this. All the best scenes were in the trailer and the rest of the movie was a bit of a slog to get through. It did have an interesting retrospective on early COVID times and the fears the film industry was having at that time, I just wish it leaned more into these elements more and presented itself as a satire to that, like the trailers advertised. It’s very much like an extended, overlong and just mind-numbingly bad SNL skit; a few good moments but overall filled with meandering gags and just such random story beats. Heck, it didn’t even feel like there was a story, it started with a bit of one and then stuff just started happening all over the place. What a mess… and no fun.
