Spiderhead (2022)

Rating: 7.3

Unfortunately, this is not on the level of “Top Gun: Maverick”. Although that would be an unfair expectation to put on this movie, as “Maverick” was an incredible film. Joseph Kosinski still does some great work here, and I personally love his style and direction. All his films look incredible too, he has such an excellent eye for cinematography. This film is easily no exception, it looks fantastic, is lit incredibly well, and has some really cool production design. I also loved both Chris Hemsworth and Miles Teller. Teller is just a great actor, and I love seeing this more deranged, “fun” side of Hemsworth! There were some great elements in the script that allowed them to have some fun with their acting and flip through emotions very fast. The only thing is, the script felt a little shallow, a little weak, like it was missing something. The overall story is quite interesting and I liked the arc and all the answers it has for us, but it felt like it was missing things in the beginning and middle. It just felt like there was so much potential for this story, and it unfortunately didn’t live up to what I thought it would be. And that’s the biggest takeaway I have from this film… it’s a disappointment solely because all the people involved are capable of better. They all do good on their own, but the film feels like it’s missing something. Hell… it even has “Ex Machina” vibes… and it just made me want to watch that instead. I still found it to be good however, and there were elements I really liked, whether it be the music, visuals, direction or acting! (Kosinski is seemingly unable to make a bad looking film… the visuals are great!) It just sadly couldn’t live up to its potential.
