Spencer (2021)

Rating: 7.0

I am honestly quite indifferent about how I feel about this movie. It’s good but also wasn’t really my thing the whole way through. (Mind you people in the theatre kept distracting me from the film.) I honestly don’t have strong feelings on this one. Its a very slow burn, but quite the interesting exploration of Diana’s inner struggles and the disconnected feelings of being an outsider in the royal family. It shows her psyche in such an interesting way, showing how she feels like a prisoner inside the royal family. It follows Diana’s mental health, relationship issues and struggles with the royal lifestyle in quite the unique and honest way, even if the story isn’t completely true. It’s definitely a fiction based on reality, and honestly I think I would have rathered a full biopic exploring these issues over this result which to me seemed to only scratch the surface, and never went too deep into the issues. The direction is okay, but I felt like at times Larraín was over directing scenes and they came off somewhat muddled and messy. He does make it feel very intimate and personal; a mental breakdown of what Diana was feeling during these times. He showed the claustrophobia, fear, and mental state in such unique ways, even blending in a few horror techniques. The script is decent too: its a strong character study, it has its moments but doesn’t feel as strong it should. Kristen Stewart was good as Diana, she looked and felt like her, but she’s unfortunately just not a fantastic actor so some things don’t perfectly work. However I do think you wouldn’t be wrong for assuming she will be nominated for an Oscar! Other than that, the cinematography was okay, music was a mess and the production design was interesting. I thought it was okay but I’m really not sure. It’s probably well made, just didn’t really speak to me.

Biography, Drama

During her Christmas holidays with the royal family at the Sandringham estate in Norfolk, England, Diana decides to leave her marriage to Prince Charles.

Fun Fact: The candlelight family game night scene was structured but not completely scripted, so Stewart and co-stars Jack Nielen and Freddie Spry were given the freedom to improvise, and the entire scene is improv.
