Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (2022)

Updated: Apr 13, 2022

Rating: 7.9

Sonic 2 was such a fun time at the movies! I had a blast, laughed out loud multiple times and had a smile on my face throughout the entire runtime of the film. As someone who liked, but didn’t love, the original Sonic movie from 2 years ago, I had moderate expectations for this, but it ended up fully surpassing those! I personally enjoyed it a lot more than the first film, and felt it truly improved upon its predecessor, fixing a lot of the issues (not all) I had with the first one and delivering such a fun, entertaining film once again! It doubles down on everything great about the first one; the fun, lighthearted adventure, likeable characters, fun action and high energy, and sidelines the qualities that weren’t so great. It also nicely expanded the lore and mythology of the Sonic world, making it feel more like a true Sonic movie unlike the first film. It has many moments Sonic fans will undoubtedly go crazy for, especially near the end and in the end credit scene.

Now, let me also be clear, this movie is not perfect, nor is it a great technically made film. But its not supposed to be a critically acclaimed film, it’s supposed to be fun! Its capably made in many areas and flows so nicely, with my real only issues coming down to the writing and pacing. At 2 hours long, the film felt like it was 10-15 mins too long, and had scenes that completely halted the pace of the film. Scenes like the dance-off scene, or the whole wedding sequence were entirely unnecessary, and while the latter was very fun, the movie didn’t need it as it really didn’t add anything story-wise. This brings me to my next point; this film doesn’t need its human characters besides Dr. “Eggman” Robotnik. As much as I love James Marsden, his character had nothing to do in the film and wasn’t necessary to the story anymore. They clearly didn’t know what to do with his character and created unnecessary sub-plots to give him something to do. The development of these characters was also paper thin compared to Sonic, Eggman, Knuckles or even Tails.

The introduction of Knuckles was thrilling, he was so awesome in the movie and I loved the fight scenes he had with Sonic. He was perfectly voiced by Idris Elba who turns out to be a great voice actor and has some fantastic comedic timing! The only issue is that Knuckles sort of overshadowed Tails, who was fun but didn’t stand out as much to me. Sonic was great once again, he had some fantastic moments and Ben Schwartz proves he’s the perfect one to voice him. But much like the first film, my absolute favourite performance was from Jim Carrey. I love him in this role and he was even more fun playing the even more unhinged, true “Eggman” version of Robotnik. He was always on, had fantastic line delivery and his chaotic energy works so well! Plus he looked great with the Eggman look!

And the action in this film… wow they really improved it over the first! Its absolutely fantastic and huge in scale! The CGI is also pretty good for most of the characters, with a few minor flaws here and there. Jeff Fowler really found the groove that these movies need to operate in with this one, its an awesome Sonic movie! It has such a fluid, fun vibe with lots of great action set pieces that are truly some of the best in any video game adaptation. I really enjoyed the film and had so much fun with it! It’s a great time at the movies, I highly recommend it! Pretty much a near perfect Sonic film!

When the manic Dr Robotnik returns to Earth with a new ally, Knuckles the Echidna, Sonic and his new friend Tails is all that stands in their way.

Fun Fact: Sonic and Tails flying towards Robotnik's flying fortress is clearly a reference to Sky Chase Zone from both Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic Adventure.
