Society of the Snow (2024)
Streaming on Netflix Now
★★★★
Society of the Snow is an emotionally grueling and unbelievable true story of survival. Some of the most beautiful and harrowing work of J.A. Bayona’s career including one of cinema’s most terrifying plane crashes. The ensemble of mostly unknown actors is extraordinary, giving frightening performances that make you feel you’re right beside them going through this unimaginable nightmare. An immersive, brutal experience backed by a moving Michael Giacchino score.
Premise: The flight of a rugby team crashes on a glacier in the Andes. The few passengers who survive the crash find themselves in one of the world's toughest environments to survive.

Screenplay by J.A. Bayona, Bernat Vilaplana, Jaime Marques-Olarrega & Nicolás Casariego
Based on the book “Le sociedad de la nieve” by Pablo Vierci
Fun Fact: This film explores the aftermath of the survivor's rescue in greater detail than the 1993 film. What is not depicted is the public reaction to the news of the subject of cannibalism when it eventually broke. The survivors kept this detail private for as long as they could, discussing it with their families only. The public story was that they ate provisions from the plane and plant matter found in the mountains. Once word got out, the survivors held one press conference to discuss the matter. Predictably, there were members of the public who were horrified and it inspired much debate about the subject of morals in a survival situation.•
