Pinocchio (2022)

Rating: 7.0

I know this is an unpopular opinion… but I kinda liked this new version of Disney’s Pinocchio! It’s cute! While it’s hardly a 5-star film, it was pleasant and enjoyable, and surely a film families with young children will be able to enjoy together! The first act was my favourite, it had me really feeling that classic Disney magic feeling! After that I thought the film got a little off the rails and got a little cartoony or little kid focused, something I felt Zemeckis leaned a little to hard on. And despite some decent CGI and nice visuals… the movie felt a little hollow and soulless at times. Tom Hanks was the only aspect of it that I felt brought some magic to it. I liked seeing this story told in live action, even if it was best for beat exactly the same, but I feel like under a better director it could have been a little more compelling, as Zemeckis just isn’t that great of a filmmaker anymore. It’s good, for a streaming film, but it definitely would have been out of place on the big screen, which is sad considering this is such a classic story. I also found the film seemed to expect you knew the story already, especially with iconic lines of dialogue. Also… minor note… for all the iconic Disney music this one has… they sure cut off the musical sequences very quickly… I was not a fan of that. Ultimately while this movie is cute…. but it’s much worse than the original. The story here doesn’t serve the themes as nicely and it just kinda feels like nothing. At least it looked nice and was enjoyable… and this is coming from someone who usually loves these live action remakes.
