Morbius (2022)

So this movie has been delayed for 2 years now right? And in those 2 years no one at Sony realized what a shitshow this movie actually is? How can they possibly even have thought this movie was good enough for release, nevermind to serve as another entry in their budding “Sony Spider-Verse” (which I care about even less now). It’s truly terrible, boring, even. And I’m saying this as someone who went in expecting it to be bad; the movie just ended up proving me right, and being even worse than I expected it to be. It is a clustered slugfest, for me there were almost no redeeming qualities. It felt like they filmed a first draft of a script and then butchered it in the editing room.

This is a movie that feels like it was made in the late 90s before people figured out how to make a good superhero/comic book movie. The concept is cool, but in execution this film was awful. So many poor choices were made, and to me it felt like a movie made by studio demands, not the actual filmmakers. Actually, it was indeed probably butchered by the studio, as it felt like a 2 hour movie cut down to an hour and a half. The editing was just so weird, scenes felt like they were chopped up and moving way too fast; it’s like the movie was trying to throw a ton of information at you in the least possible time. It felt cluttered, and very disjointed; it didn’t even flow well. The movie has no plot to it really, stuff just happens until it builds to a climax, and then just ends with no resolution. It is very rushed too, and has nothing remotely close to character development. Interestingly enough the “story” we got was just a mix of the Goblin plot from “Amazing Spider-Man 2” mixed with the plot of “Venom”… there was no new ground covered here. There’s no tension to anything that happens, I just found myself rolling my eyes at the movie. And it’s purely the script’s problem, the director just is not skilled enough to deviate from the script; he directs purely what is on the page. But overall it still is a pretty shitty product in the end.

And the visual effects… oh boy. The vampire faces made me laugh out loud at how bad they looked, and they completely took away from any semblance of performances the actors were trying to make. And don’t even get me started on the action scenes. They are extremely visually confusing; a mess of CGI so bad that you can’t tell what is going on. It was awful, just blurs of colour. I also found it strange that there was no blood shown in the movie, considering it is a vampire flick (especially when the sound mix has sounds of splattering blood all the time). The sound mix was truly terrible too, and the score was a complete rip off of scores like “The Dark Knight Rises”. The cast was okay, Jared Leto was fine, but Matt Smith upstaged him for me!

Overall this film was completely incoherent and incredibly frustrating. And that's without even mentioning the HORRIBLE end credit scenes that don’t even make sense. The trailers lied too, all the references to Spider-Man are cut out and Michael Keaton was completely cut out of the film, aside from one small scene. It is not the “Morbius'' movie you want to see at all. I didn’t think it looked good going in and I still thought it was absolute shit, so I feel bad for those who were excited for this. It makes “Venom” look like a masterpiece, and proves Sony is incapable at making these films. I didn’t care for this one bit, it's one of the rare films I truly hate. I do not recommend it, I saw this movie so you don’t have to!

Biochemist Michael Morbius tries to cure himself of a rare blood disease, but he inadvertently infects himself with a form of vampirism instead.

Fun Fact: Jared Leto claimed that Michael Morbius' personality was close enough to own to where he didn't find it necessary to use his famous method approach in his portrayal of the character. Despite how much fun he had, he still found the role quite challenging due it being less character-driven than his previous performances.
