Minions: The Rise of Gru (2022)

Rating: 6.8

Was this the cinematic masterpiece that social media trends made it out to be? Hell no. Let’s be real… it was cute, and that’s okay. It was entertaining for what it is, and there were definitely some silly gags that made me smile, but it’s nothing revolutionary, not even for the “Despicable Me” franchise. It’s definitely an improvement over the first “Minions” as well as “Despicable Me 3”, as it uses its connections to the first “Despicable Me” for some great moments of nostalgia! Just by connecting itself to that movie (which I really like) it automatically becomes better! We got to see lots of familiar faces and other recognizable elements, I really liked the prequel elements of it! The plot however… was somewhat nonexistent. There was a tiny bit of one there, they definitely tried, but I wasn’t a huge fan of it. I didn’t like the villainous group the Vicious 6 either… and they got weirder as the movie went on. That being said… everything with mini Gru and the minions was great, as always! The minions are still as silly as ever, and they still found ways to have some great moments despite starting to feel played out. I LOVED the Bond style opening credits with Gru as Bond and the minions as the Bond girls! I found that really clever, and I also loved the 70s setting and the great soundtrack (which did feel excessive at times but I loved the music regardless)! And while I did have a good time with it (and the animation was great), something about it all felt hollow… like I spent my 1.5 hours watching nothing at all. So I can’t say it was great, but it was cute, and definitely my favourite since the first two “Despicable Me” films!

In the 1970s, young Gru tries to join a group of supervillains called the Vicious 6 after they oust their leader -- the legendary fighter Wild Knuckles. When the interview turns disastrous, Gru and his Minions go on the run with the Vicious 6 hot on their tails. Luckily, he finds an unlikely source for guidance -- Wild Knuckles himself -- and soon discovers that even bad guys need a little help from their friends.

Fun Fact: A viral Tiktok trend by Gen-Z viewers made it a meme to dress in suits and attend the film en masse. It was prevalent enough that several cinemas had to ban the teens due to disruptions. As a result PostTrak, reported 34 percent of the opening weekend audience was between ages 13 and 17, an unusually high showing of teenagers for an animated film. The last entry in the franchise, Despicable Me 3 (2017), only had teenagers make up 8 percent of the audience.
