Finch (2021)

Rating: 8.0

While this movie is somewhat generic and not really memorable overall, I still thought it was very good. It’s a simple, human story with lots of emotion interwoven into the beats of the plot. It’s beautifully paced, wonderfully directed by the man behind some of Game of Thrones’ best episodes (Miguel Sapochnik), however is not the most visually or technically significant film out there. It does still look pretty cinematic though, and the colour palette is quite nice! The CGI for the robot, Jeff, is absolutely stunning, as he looks so real and they find a way to make his robotic face seem like it has so much emotion in it. The robot is surprisingly, but heartwarmingly human (a lot like Wall-E). And honestly, that’s a good way to describe the film itself; I didn’t think I’d get emotional over it but the film had me rethinking the kind of things I take for granted in life and the complexities of what it means to be human. Tom Hanks is wonderful in the film, he pretty much is the only character and he still manages to bring to much charm to the role, despite his character being very isolated, lonely and occasionally very cold. I still loved the story, and the commitment he had to ensure his dog would be taken care of when he passed away. It’s tragic at times but beautiful and emotional in others, I thought it was pretty good, despite it not being very innovative as a sci-fi film.
