Don't Look Up (2021)

Rating: 8.7

This movie is so good, yet so frustrating. It’s not the film itself that is, instead it’s the society that it focuses on; our modern society. Adam McKay holds a mirror up to every aspect of modern society and takes hits at all of it; the media, politics, social media, and peoples responses to global issues. McKay pulls no punches in this excellent and truly important satire. I would argue this is the best satire ever made since Kubrick’s Dr. Strangelove. Now, for some this may seem quite heavy handed and that it’s trying to push its message on you, but those who know and like Adam McKay’s style from films such as The Big Short or Vice will really enjoy this! It’s funny, and yet makes you want to rip your hair out at times, truly showing how pathetic of a society we can be. It’s brutally honest and shows some of the worst things about humans, from racism and other divisions we impose on ourselves to greed and materialism, to politicians who refuse to listen to science. It’s a truly important film to watch, and I hope people see it and open their eyes to the issues that we face as humans so we can fix them. It’s not an optimistic movie, however, and basically states that humans are screwed. The comet is a perfect metaphor for climate change, and the responses people have to it in the film feel very real and true to life after seeing how people reacted to COVID. Truly I think this is one of the best screenplays of the year. It’s well made too, the cast is exceptional and everyone does a good job, I especially loved Mark Rylance on his take of a Steve Jobs crossed with Elon Musk character. Everyone was really funny in it too! The CGI in the movie was also surprisingly excellent. It’s terrific all around, but it’s true strength is the strongly satirical screenplay that is a poignant reflection of the society we live in and the issues we face. It’s aggravating and frustrating and makes you want to scream, but I hope it truly starts conversations that could lead to some sort of change. It’s unfortunate that many won’t watch because of how political it can get, but I feel it’s truly an important film to see and one of the best Netflix has ever produced. It doesn’t take a side, it just shows the mess that the world is in unbiasedly. It goes so absurd but constantly feels exactly like the world we live in, which is just so sad. And I just love Adam McKay’s style, and you really feel his sense of frustration. I laughed (it’s still a good time despite being about a heavy subject) and I watched in horror as I saw something that I could truly see happen in real life; it’s brilliant. It may not be for everyone, but it really worked for me! It’s bleak, sharp and full of humour!
